ICTESS’s EHS Risk Management & Compliance Specialization trains specialists to identify, assess, and control occupational risks in industrial and construction environments. The program covers the three dimensions of EHS (environment, health, and safety): occupational safety, occupational health, and environmental protection in technical facilities.
You will learn the risk assessment methods used on real projects: hazard analysis with probability-consequence matrices, safety and emergency plans, lockout/tagout (LOTO) programs, work permit management for high-risk activities, and inspection programs with safety KPIs. The program ends with a Capstone Project in which you will apply everything you have learned to a real construction EHS case study.
The EHS Risk Management & Compliance Specialization responds to increasingly strict occupational safety and environmental requirements in industry. Building systems, construction, and maintenance companies need professionals who can implement effective EHS management systems that ensure regulatory compliance and reduce workplace injuries.
The program prepares you to lead integrated risk management in complex technical environments. You will learn to identify hazards systematically, assess risks with recognized methods, design tailored safety plans, implement safe work procedures and manage incidents with root cause analysis to capture lessons learned.
The training covers risk assessment tools, EHS document management and the applicable framework: the OSH Act, OSHA standards for general industry (29 CFR 1910) and construction (29 CFR 1926), ISO 45001 and ISO 14001. It culminates in a Capstone Project developing a complete EHS system for a real project or facility.
The EHS Risk Management & Compliance Specialization prepares you for specialized roles at MEP contractors, general contractors, safety consulting firms, and the EHS departments of large industrial companies. You could work as a safety specialist, site safety manager, project EHS manager, or safety and health management system auditor.
The program prepares you to manage the full safety cycle in technical environments. You will assess risks in industrial facilities, build site-specific safety plans for construction projects, design safe work procedures with LOTO, run toolbox talks and safety training, carry out inspections and internal audits, and investigate incidents using causal analysis methods.
You will also learn to manage the EHS documentation regulators require, negotiate coverage with insurers, implement certifiable ISO 45001 management systems, and build dashboards with safety KPIs. The practical approach lets you apply what you learn right away on real projects.

What you'll achieve
Identify hazards and assess occupational risks using probability-consequence matrices, the hierarchy of controls, and recognized methods such as HAZOP, FMEA, and What-If.
Develop site-specific safety plans, emergency action plans, and evacuation procedures tailored to construction projects and industrial facilities.
Implement work permit systems and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures for high-risk activities, ensuring effective control of hazardous energy.
Design safety training programs, PPE selection, and toolbox talks that ensure workforce competence in occupational safety and health.
Manage EHS audits, investigate incidents through root cause analysis, and build dashboards with KPIs that drive continuous improvement of the management system.
Occupational safety and health is going through significant change, driven by evolving regulations and growing client demand for certified safety management systems. Construction, industry, and building systems remain among the highest-risk sectors, which creates steady demand for qualified EHS professionals.
Increasingly demanding legal and contractual requirements: OSHA standards set specific obligations for employers in construction and facility work, including competent person requirements and written safety programs. Many owners and contractors also require ISO 45001 during prequalification, increasing the need for professionals who can implement these systems.
Direct financial impact of workplace injuries: Workplace incidents generate direct costs (workers’ compensation, OSHA penalties, insurance premiums) and indirect costs (lost productivity, reputational damage, delays) that companies work to minimize. Professionals who design effective safety systems deliver measurable financial value.
Competitive advantage in the job market: Specialized EHS training sets you apart from technical candidates without safety expertise. A command of risk assessment, applicable regulations, certifiable management systems, and incident investigation makes you a top candidate at companies that prioritize a strong safety culture.
Completing the EHS Risk Management & Compliance Specialization positions you in a field with growing demand, driven by stricter regulations and greater business awareness of workplace safety.
Access to safety leadership roles: You will be prepared for positions such as safety specialist, site safety manager, project EHS manager, or management system auditor. A specialization in integrated risk management gives you access to roles with greater responsibility and career growth at MEP contractors and general contractors.
Command of recognized professional methods: Knowledge of risk assessment techniques (HAZOP, FMEA, root cause analysis), certifiable management systems (ISO 45001, ISO 14001), and KPI tracking tools sets you apart in hiring and lets you add value to any organization from day one.
Ability to reduce costs and injuries: You will learn to design effective safety systems that reduce incidents, lost-time injuries, and OSHA citations, delivering a direct return on investment for your employer and positioning you as a strategic professional.
Recognized professional certificate: The ICTESS professional certificate validates your technical specialization in EHS risk management and compliance. It strengthens your position in the job market and demonstrates your skills to industrial and construction employers.
This specialization is designed for technical professionals and field leaders who want to specialize in integrated occupational risk management and EHS compliance. Recommended profiles include:
Program details
The Capstone Project is the final stage of the program and brings together all the skills you develop along the way. You will build a complete EHS management system for a real project or facility, from the initial risk assessment to the continuous improvement program, applying the professional methods and management tools used in the industry.
The project must include systematic hazard identification for the assigned case, risk assessment with probability-consequence matrices, a site-specific safety plan with targeted preventive measures, safe work procedures including permits and LOTO, the training and toolbox talk program, the inspection and audit plan with KPIs, and the incident investigation procedure with root cause analysis.
The project also includes a review of applicable regulatory compliance (OSH Act, OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and 1926, and industry-specific requirements), a proposal for insurance coverage suited to the risk profile, and an EHS dashboard to track objectives. The final documentation must meet the technical level and professional format expected of construction safety plans, showing that you can produce complete, rigorous technical documentation that meets legal and regulatory requirements.
The program includes hands-on training with the risk assessment methods most widely used in industry: probability-consequence matrices, HAZOP (Hazard and Operability) analysis, What-If techniques, and FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis). You will learn to apply the hierarchy of controls to design effective preventive measures, implement lockout/tagout (LOTO) programs for hazardous energy control, and perform root cause analysis in incident investigations using methods such as the 5 Whys and the Ishikawa diagram. You will also work with professional templates for safety plans, work permits, inspection checklists, and EHS KPI dashboards.
No safety certification is required, but we recommend professional experience in industrial, construction, or building systems environments. The specialization is designed for technical professionals who manage crews, supervise projects or facilities, or hold operational responsibilities where workplace safety is critical. Superintendents, foremen, project engineers, maintenance managers, and crew leads will find content they can apply directly in their daily work. The program includes regulatory and methodological fundamentals that let you follow the content without prior safety training, although participants with a technical background in the industry will get more out of the advanced case studies.
The ICTESS Professional Certificate validates your specialization in EHS risk management and compliance, but it does not replace professional safety certifications such as the CSP or CHST from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, or OSHA Outreach Training cards (10-Hour and 30-Hour). The specialization is designed as high-level professional development that deepens practical EHS management skills in high demand: risk assessment with advanced methods, safety plan design, permit and LOTO systems, audit management, and incident investigation. Many employers value this practical training as a complement to professional certifications, because it shows the ability to manage complete EHS systems on real construction projects and industrial facilities.
The EHS Risk Management & Compliance Specialization stands out for its practical focus on technical environments and its orientation toward integrated safety system management. Many safety courses focus on general theory. This program addresses EHS management on construction sites, industrial facilities, and technical projects, using real industry cases. It includes advanced skills that basic training rarely covers: LOTO programs for hazardous energy control, work permit programs for high-risk activities, safety KPI dashboards, incident investigation with root cause analysis, and preparation for ISO 45001 management system audits. The program culminates in a complete EHS case study in which you develop a real management system.
