ICTESS’s Document Management and Version Control Training Course is designed to train professionals who can organize, control and oversee all the technical documentation generated on construction, engineering and building systems projects. The program covers the document management systems most widely used in the industry: Common Data Environments (CDEs), standardized folder structures and information exchange protocols.
You will learn the professional procedures used on real projects: configuring metadata based on ISO 19650, managing permissions and approval workflows, processing RFIs, submittals and transmittals, controlling revisions with full traceability, and preparing final deliverables for archiving. The course includes a Capstone Project in which you will implement a complete document management system for a technical project.
The Document Management and Version Control Training Course addresses a critical need on complex technical projects: efficiently managing large volumes of documentation that must stay current, traceable and accessible to multiple stakeholders. Poor document control leads to construction errors, schedule delays, contract disputes and financial losses that the right procedures could prevent.
The goal of the course is to train professionals who can implement and manage robust document management systems from the design phase through project closeout. You will learn to structure document repositories based on international standards, configure automated workflows, manage the document lifecycle, coordinate information exchange among stakeholders and ensure the integrity and traceability of every version.
The training includes hands-on work with professional CDE platforms used on construction and engineering projects (Aconex, Procore, BIM 360, Dalux) and culminates in a Capstone Project where you will build a complete document management system, applying every skill covered in the technical modules.
The Document Management and Version Control Training Course prepares you for specialized roles at general contractors, engineering firms, architecture firms, real estate developers and public agency technical departments. You will be able to work as a Document Controller, document management lead, project information coordinator or document quality specialist on building, infrastructure and industrial projects.
The training prepares you to manage a project’s full document cycle: setting up standardized folder structures, establishing file naming conventions based on industry standards, administering access permissions and approval workflows, processing requests for information and submittals for review, and making sure every stakeholder always works from the current version of each document.
You will also build the skills to perform document audits, detect procedural noncompliance, prepare document status reports and assemble as-built documentation for project turnover and archiving. The hands-on approach lets you apply what you learn right away in real construction environments.

Design standardized folder structures and metadata systems based on ISO 19650 and BIM standards, ensuring consistent organization of all project documentation.
Configure Common Data Environments (CDEs) with role-based access permissions and automated approval workflows that ensure document quality control.
Manage the full cycle of RFIs, submittals and transmittals, establishing tracking and response procedures that prevent delays and contract disputes.
Implement revision control systems with full traceability, ensuring all stakeholders always work from the current version of each document.
Prepare as-built documentation for project turnover and archiving, meeting contractual and regulatory requirements for long-term document retention.
Document management has become a critical success factor on construction and engineering projects. Errors caused by working from outdated documentation lead to rework, delays and contract disputes that could be avoided with proper version control and document distribution procedures.
Rapid digital transformation of the industry: BIM adoption and the growing number of owners and public agencies that require Common Data Environments are reshaping information management requirements. Companies need professionals who can implement and administer these systems, yet profiles with specific training in technical document management for construction and engineering remain hard to find.
A contractual requirement on large projects: Contract documents and RFPs for major projects require documented procedures for version control, change traceability and deliverable management. Mastering these procedures lets you take part in international projects and public bids where document compliance is a prerequisite.
Reduced risk and fewer disputes: Sound document management provides the primary evidence when claims arise. Professionals who can ensure the integrity of the project record bring real value to preventing and resolving the contract disputes common in the industry.
Completing the Document Management and Version Control Training Course positions you in a cross-disciplinary field with growing demand on every sizable technical project. The digital transformation of construction and BIM adoption are creating steady need for project information management specialists.
Access to a growing career path: The Document Controller role has become essential on mid-size and large projects. You can pursue dedicated positions or add this skill to your technical profile, increasing your value to contractors, engineering firms and developers.
Command of professional tools: Hands-on experience with CDE platforms such as Aconex, Procore, BIM 360 and Dalux sets you apart in hiring, since they are standard on international projects.
Ability to prevent costly mistakes: You will master procedures that prevent common problems: building from outdated drawings, lost documentation, missed RFI deadlines and disputes from gaps in traceability, all of which cause significant cost overruns.
A recognized ICTESS certificate: The ICTESS certificate validates your specialization in document management and version control, strengthening your position in the job market and demonstrating your skills to industry employers.

Program details
The Capstone Project is the culminating stage of the program and brings together all the technical skills developed throughout the course. It consists of implementing a complete document management system for a technical project, from initial setup to final turnover procedures, using the professional methodologies and tools applied in the industry.
The project includes designing a standardized folder structure based on ISO 19650, defining the metadata system and naming conventions, configuring the Common Data Environment (CDE) with role-based permissions and setting up automated approval workflows. You will develop operating procedures for managing RFIs, submittals and transmittals, including templates, response times and distribution routes for each stakeholder.
The work also includes designing a revision control system with full traceability, periodic document audit procedures and the project turnover and archiving protocol with its as-built documentation. The final deliverable must meet the technical level and professional format required by a BIM Execution Plan (BEP), demonstrating your ability to implement complete document management systems on real industry projects.
The Document Management and Version Control Training Course from ICTESS includes hands-on training with the industry’s leading CDE (Common Data Environment) platforms: Aconex for large-scale and infrastructure projects, Procore for end-to-end construction management, Autodesk BIM 360 for BIM environments and Dalux for field documentation and turnover. You will learn to configure these environments from scratch: folder structure, role-based access permissions, approval workflows, transmittal management and status reporting. You will also work with complementary tools such as SharePoint for corporate document repositories and PDF comparison software. Proficiency in these platforms is a common requirement in Document Controller and project information coordinator job postings.
Prior construction experience is not required, although a basic understanding of the industry or of technical project management is recommended. The course is designed both for professionals already working on jobsites and at engineering firms and for administrative or technical profiles who want to specialize in document management. If you come from another industry, the introductory content will give you the context you need on construction document types (drawings, specifications, RFIs, submittals and more). What matters most is strong organizational skills, attention to detail and comfort with digital tools. Professionals from administration, quality, records management or project support will find this course a high-demand specialization path in the industry.
The ICTESS certificate validates your technical training in document management and version control as high-level specialized professional development. While no license or specific degree is required to work as a Document Controller, the certificate documents very specific skills that employers actively look for: CDE platform proficiency, knowledge of ISO 19650 and BIM standards, the ability to manage RFIs and transmittals, and hands-on experience implementing document management systems. Many contractors and engineering firms value this kind of training as evidence of up-to-date professional skills, since the Document Controller role requires knowledge that traditional degree programs do not cover and that is gained only through specialized training or direct project experience.
The Document Management and Version Control Training Course stands out for its specific focus on construction and engineering projects and its technical depth in industry procedures. While generic courses cover general records management or administrative document handling, this program focuses on technical project documentation: drawings, specifications, calculation reports, RFIs, submittals, transmittals and as-built documentation. The content covers industry-specific procedures such as ISO 19650 coding, BIM integration, typical field approval workflows and contractual deliverable management with its legal implications. You will also work with real professional CDE platforms (Aconex, Procore, BIM 360) that are rarely available in general training programs.
